Summer Road Trip Checklist: Get Your Car Shore-Ready

June 15, 2026

Nothing ruins a summer trip faster than a breakdown on the side of the road in the heat. A little prep before you load up the car prevents most vacation-killing failures. Here’s the checklist we’d run on our own vehicles before a long drive.

Tires - the number one summer breakdown

Heat is hard on tires. Hot pavement plus an underinflated or worn tire is the recipe for a blowout. Before a trip, check:

  • Tread depth. Worn tires lose grip, especially in summer thunderstorms.
  • Tire pressure, including the spare. Set it to the door-jamb spec, not the number on the tire.
  • Age and condition. Look for cracking, bulges, or uneven wear, which can signal alignment or suspension issues.

Cooling system

Summer heat plus highway speeds plus a loaded car is exactly when a weak cooling system gives up. Check coolant level and look for an overheating history. If your temperature gauge has been creeping up around town, don’t take it on the highway until it’s looked at.

Brakes

You’ll be carrying more weight (people, luggage, maybe a cooler full of everything) and possibly driving unfamiliar roads. If you’ve noticed any of the brake warning signs, sort them before you go, not after.

Air conditioning

If the AC is already weak in June, it will be miserable in August traffic. A warm-blowing system before a trip is worth checking now.

Fluids and battery

Top-to-bottom: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, washer fluid. And don’t forget the battery - heat actually kills batteries faster than cold does. A battery that’s three-plus years old and slow to crank may not survive the summer.

Lights and wipers

Quick but easy to forget: check all exterior lights and replace wipers if they streak. Summer storms come fast on the highway.

The smart move: one pre-trip inspection

Rather than chase each item separately, a single pre-trip inspection catches everything above at once. Our auto maintenance service includes a thorough check of tires, fluids, brakes, battery, and belts - peace of mind before you pull out of the driveway.

Planning a trip soon? Send us a message to book a pre-trip check, and you can look up your vehicle to see if there are any open recalls worth handling first.
