A failed DOT inspection means downtime, and downtime means lost revenue. The good news: most violations are avoidable with a careful walk-around before you ever pull into the lane. Here’s the checklist we use at Nick’s to get trucks road-legal and audit-ready.
Brakes and air system
Brake problems are the single most common out-of-service violation, so start here.
- Listen for air leaks with the engine off and brakes applied.
- Check that the low-air warning activates around 60 psi.
- Look for cracked, worn, or contaminated linings and pads.
- Confirm slack adjusters are within spec and the same length side to side.
Tires and wheels
- Steer tires need at least 4/32” of tread; other positions at least 2/32”.
- No exposed cord, sidewall bulges, or cuts.
- Check for loose or missing lug nuts and any rust streaking that signals a loose wheel.
- Set pressures to the door/placard spec — under-inflation builds heat and fails inspections.
Lights and reflectors
- Walk every lamp: headlights, markers, turn signals, brake lights, and trailer connections.
- Replace anything dim, cracked, or out — it’s a cheap fix that fails an inspection fast.
Steering, suspension, and leaks
- Check for play in the steering wheel and worn tie-rod ends.
- Look under the truck for fresh oil, coolant, or fuel leaks.
- Inspect springs, hangers, and air bags for cracks or damage.
Paperwork and the cab
Inspectors check more than the mechanical side:
- Current registration, insurance, and medical card.
- A working horn, wipers, mirrors, and seat belt.
- Fire extinguisher, spare fuses, and three warning triangles.
The smart move: a pre-DOT inspection
The fastest way to pass is to have a shop run a full inspection before your official one, so anything marginal gets fixed on your schedule — not flagged on the inspector’s. That’s exactly what our DOT & preventive-maintenance program is for, and fleet accounts get priority scheduling so your trucks aren’t sitting.
